Avignon demography
With 91,921 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Avignon is the largest city in the Vaucluse department and the 44th largest city in France . With a land area of 64.78 km² , this corresponds to a population density of 1419 inhabitants per km². The annual population growth is 0.4% (1999–2017 average). The urban settlementzone( Unité urbaine ) of Avignon had 440,770 inhabitants in 2008, the Aire urbaine 507,626 inhabitants.
Population development
According to the INSEE census , Avignon had 89,592 inhabitants in 2009 (an increase of around 4.25% compared to 1999).
The municipality was ranked 44th nationally in 2008 , while it was 45th in 1999 , and first out of 151 municipalities at the departmental level. The development of the population is based on censuses that go back to the year 1793. The maximum population was reached in 2006 with 92,454 inhabitants.
The First World War had a significant impact on the community's population as it caused the first population decline of the 20th century ( -2.3% between 1911 and 1922).
After the Second World War one can observe an increase in the population, which became relatively important in the 1960s with the return of many emigrants from North Africa .
Compared to the very strong demographic growth in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (PACA) region, the population of the city of Avignon stagnated from 1975 to 2000. Various causes (service offers, quality of life, tax burdens ...) could explain the loss of attractiveness of the municipality of Avignon, the emigration of its inhabitants and the settlement in the surrounding municipalities.
During this period of time, the steady decline in the inner-city population could hardly be compensated for by an increase in the number of inhabitants in the outskirts.
According to INSEE, the city center has recently seen a positive migration balance again. Several inner-city rehabilitation and development projects, such as B. the clos des arts , could explain part of this development and show that the city is striving to counteract migration. The construction of the LGV Méditerranée line and the TGV train station probably also had a positive impact, also on the development in the region as a whole ( + 0.7% per year in PACA compared to + 0.3% in France).
In 2008, the greater Avignon area had more than 175,738 inhabitants and the entire metropolitan area , which is made up of 69 communes from the Vaucluse department , 14 communes from the Gard department and 14 communes from the Bouches-du-Rhône department , exceeded the 500,000 mark.
The Unité urbaine had 440,651 inhabitants on January 1, 2007 , placing the city in 14th place in France, between Strasbourg (13th place) and Montpellier (15th place), i.e. H. an increase of ten places since 1999. The increase in population can mainly be explained by the addition of the municipalities of Orange and Cavaillon . After an expansion in 2010, the Unité urbaine comprised 59 municipalities, which were spread over three départements and two regions.
Age pyramid
The community's population is relatively young. The proportion of people over 60 ( 21.4% ) is below the national rate ( 21.6% ) and below the rate in the department ( 23.5% ).
As with the national and departmental distribution, the proportion of women in the municipality is slightly higher than that of men. The share ( 53.7% ) is more than two percentage points above the national value ( 51.6% ). The population distribution of the municipality in different age groups was as follows in 2007:
- 53.7% women (0 to 14 years = 17% , 15 to 29 years = 21.8% , 30 to 44 years = 18.8% , 45 to 59 years = 18.7% , more than 60 years = 23 , 7% )
- 46.3% men (0 to 14 years = 20.2% , 15 to 29 years = 22.9% , 30 to 44 years = 20% , 45 to 59 years = 18.1% , more than 60 years = 18 , 7% )
