Dengue Fever is a six-member band from Los Angeles that combines Cambodian pop music and lyrics with psychedelic rock .
history
Dengue Fever was founded in 2001 by Ethan Holtzman and his brother Zac, inspired by Ethan's trip to Cambodia. Singer Chhom Nimol was discovered performing at a nightclub in the Little Phnom Penh area of Longbeach when Ethan and Zac were looking for an artist who could sing in the Khmer language .
Her debut album Dengue Fever was released in 2003. All the lyrics of their early releases are sung in Khmer, only on the third album are some lyrics in English. Many songs are cover versions of Cambodian rock songs from the 1960s, for example by Sinn Sisamouth and Ros Sereysothea , but some songs are original compositions that the Holtzmans first wrote in English and then translated.
The band's second album, Escape from Dragon House , was one of Amazon.com 's "Top 100 Editor's Picks" in 2005.
Ethanopium , the cover version of a song by Ethiopian jazz musician Mulatu Astatke , is included on the soundtrack of Jim Jarmusch's 2005 film Broken Flowers , as well as the soundtrack of the novel adaptation Neue Vahr Süd (2010) by Hermine Huntgeburth .
One Thousand Tears of a Tarantula is on the soundtrack to the second season of the Showtime series Weeds - Weeds included.
Both Sides Now , a Joni Mitchell cover, can be found on the soundtrack of the Matt Dillon film City of Ghosts from 2002.
The documentary Sleepwalking Through the Mekong shows the band visiting Phnom Penh , Cambodia , during the 2005 Bon Om Thook Water Festival.
