Denigh was a British hard rock and new wave of British heavy metal band from Folkestone that was formed in 1978 and disbanded in 1985.

history

The band was formed in 1978. After a short time, the singer and bassist Jon Everett, the guitarist and keyboardist Ian Devlin, the guitarist Phil Allchin and the drummer John Regan found a permanent line-up. In the following years they worked on the first songs before the first appearance followed in 1979. In addition, a first demo with eight songs was recorded, which includes the pieces Bed of Nails , Burn the Sky and Falling Snow . Copies of the demo were distributed to fans at concerts, which allowed the band to increase their popularity. In 1980 the single No Way followed through Ace Records with the song Running as the B-side. The sound carrier was sold relatively well, whereby it was distributed nationally. Through the single, the group was able to increase its popularity, especially in the Midlands . The group was also played locally on the radio and contributed some interviews and sessions to the Kent Rocks Show . The lack of money and a lack of management prevented the group from quickly releasing more records. However, Denigh was able to achieve appearances with bands like Budgie , Girlschool , Rage , Saxon and Samson . After disputes about the future of the band, Ian Devlin left the line-up in late 1981. In the same year the band had also given a tour of France . As a replacement for Devlin Martyn Harris was added, with the band mostly traveling as a trio in their main activities. Their concerts were limited to regional pubs and clubs. Another demo, called Lean on 'Em Hard , was released in 1983 and contains eight songs written by Everett and Allchin. The demo again sold quite considerably locally. Chris Daughters joined the cast a little later as the new drummer. The following year the group recorded material for an entire album. The search for a label that wanted to release the album on record was in vain, which is why Fire from the Sky was released as a compact cassette . Comparatively few copies of the album were sold. This was followed by an appearance with Bernie Tormé . The concert was recorded for later publication, but the recordings were destroyed in a fire. In 1985 the band officially announced their breakup. In the following years there were only isolated, small and local appearances. 1997 the songs No Way and Running were included on the sampler NWOBHM Metal Rarities Vol. 3 by British Steel Records . In 1998 a self-titled compilation of old demo recordings and live recordings was released, which had been put together by Everett and Devlin. In 2002 Fire from the Sky was re-released with two bonus songs on CD via Iron Pages Records .

style

According to Malc Macmillan, Denigh was one of the first rock bands from Kent to establish themselves in the region. The songs were mainly written by Everett, Devlin and Allchin, while Regan had to stay in the background. The single No Way is reminiscent of bands like Demolition , Virgin Star and Angel Witch . The later material is more reminiscent of Bleak House and Legend . The hard and the ballad-like songs are, wrote Alan Tepper in Eclipsed , characterized by expressive vocals, solid rhythm work and twin guitars that are partly reminiscent of Thin Lizzy . The International Encyclopedia of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal by Tony Jasper and Derek Oliver calls the band's music heavy rock.
