Career

On June 13, 2004 in Tscheboksary he set a world best time in 50 km walking with 3:35:29 h and undercut the old best time of the Pole Robert Korzeniowski by more than half a minute. However, Korzeniowski's performance was still officially listed as a world record, as no doping test , which is mandatory for the recognition of a world record, was carried out in Cheboksary . At the 2007 World Championships , he initially stayed behind the top group, but was able to make up a few positions over the last few kilometers. After 3:46:57 h, he finished fourth, but was more than two minutes behind bronze medalist Alex Schwazer .

At the 2011 World Championships in Daegu , he took 1st place in the 50 km walk with a time of 3:42:45 h. His teammate Sergei Bakulin was subsequently stripped of the championship title because of doping .
