DenizBank A.Ş. is a private credit institution in Turkey that was 99.85% owned by the Russian banking group Sberbank from 2012 to 2018 and has been part of Emirates NBD since then .
history
DenizBank was founded in 1938 as a state bank to finance the then growing Turkish maritime industry . In 1992 the then Turkish government decided to consolidate a certain number of banks in state ownership. DenizBank merged with EmlakBank.
In 1997 the Turkish government made the decision to privatize the bank to 100% and it was put out to tender with no significant investments other than 3 branches. Zorlu Holding acquired the bank from the Turkish Privatization Agency in 1997 for $ 70 million and began operations in September of the same year. With the revitalization program, new branches were opened under the new name. The expansion was supported by the acquisition of branches of other banks, especially Tarişbank in 2002. DenizBank also expanded into the international market with takeovers and the establishment of banks in Austria , Russia and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus .
In 2003 DenizBank Financial Services Group (DFSG) was founded to create an umbrella company that offers a wide range of financial services. The product range was expanded by opening up areas such as investment banking , brokerage , factoring and leasing .
In October 2006 DenizBank was acquired by Dexia. On May 31, 2006, the Belgian bank Dexia , then one of the leading financial groups in Europe, initially took over 75% of the shares in Zorlu Holding for $ 2.437 billion. After getting into massive financial difficulties in the wake of the financial crisis, Dexia Holding sold DenizBank to Sberbank , Russia's largest bank, for EUR 2.79 billion on September 28, 2013 .
On July 1, 2013, Citibank Turkey's private customer business portfolio with more than 600,000 customers and almost 1,400 employees was transferred to DenizBank.
On September 20, 2010 DenizBank had a total of 489 branches. In 2017 DenizBank had 740 branches internationally and more than 14,700 employees. In Germany, DenizBank has branches in 16 cities: Augsburg, Berlin, Dresden, Duisburg, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Essen, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Karlsruhe, Cologne, Leipzig, Mannheim, Munich, Stuttgart and Wiesbaden.

Presence in the media
The bank hit the headlines in Austria after two employees murdered a customer in 2012 after embezzling his money. In 2015, the former Denizbank employees were sentenced to long prison terms.
In 2017, the Austrian media reported on a ruling by the Vienna Higher Regional Court following a lawsuit by the Association for Consumer Information , according to which 24 clauses in Deniz Bank terms and conditions are unlawful because they are opaque and grossly discriminate customers.
In 2018 it became known that the Austrian Denizbank had lent 8.2 billion euros in loans to corporate customers in Turkey. Due to the decline of the Turkish lira, the financial market regulator worried about the intrinsic value of these loans. After Sberbank sold DenizBank to Emirates NBD for 3.2 billion dollars, there was speculation in the media about possible renegotiations of the deal due to the Lira crisis. Ultimately, this reduced the purchase price to $ 2.75 billion.
