The Monument to the People's Heroes ( Chinese  人民 英雄 纪念碑 , Pinyin Rénmín Yīngxíong Jĭnìanbēi ) in Beijing is the national monument of the People's Republic of China . It is located on Tian'anmen Square (Gate of Heavenly Peace) and was built by the Chinese architect Liang Sicheng and his wife Lin Huiyin .

The monument was built in memory of the people who died in the revolutionary struggles of the 19th and 20th centuries in China. It was planned with the resolution at the first plenary session of the Political Consultative Conference of the Chinese People on November 30, 1949.

According to various sources, the monument is between 36.88 meters and 38.1 meters high and covers an area of ​​around 3,000 square meters. It was built from August 1952 to May 1958 and stands north of the mausoleum of Mao Zedong on the southern edge of Tian'anmen Square. It weighs over 10,000 tons and is made up of around 17,000 blocks of marble and granite from Qingdao in Shandong Province and the Fangshan District outside Beijing. It is crowned by a cornice with a curved stone roof.

At the base of the monument there are eight large reliefs , which were carved from white marble slabs and depict episodes from the First Opium War in 1839 to the crossing of the Yangtze in 1949. These are arranged in clockwise order in chronological order:

  1. Burning opium at the beginning of the First Opium War in 1839
  2. The Jintian Uprising at the start of the Taiping Movement in 1851
  3. The Wuchang Uprising at the start of the 1911 Revolution ( Xinhai Revolution )
  4. The May Fourth Movement, 1919
  5. The Movement of May 30, 1925
  6. The 1927 Nanchang Uprising
  7. Resistance movement during the Second Sino-Japanese War 1931-1945
  8. Crossing the Yangtze in 1949

On the front of the monument there is also a handwriting of Mao Zedong with the words “Eternal glory to the heroes of the people!” The text on the back was formulated by Mao Zedong and written by Zhou Enlai .
