The Hauptmann von Köpenick is a German musical that premiered on June 26, 2015 at the original location of the Köpenickiade in Berlin in the Köpenick Town Hall . It is a musical adaptation based on the tragic comedy of the same name " Der Hauptmann von Köpenick " by Carl Zuckmayer from 1931. The music and the lyrics come from Heiko Stang , the book from Carl Zuckmayer.

The musical is based, as well as the famous eponymous play by Carl Zuckmayer on the true story of petty criminal Wilhelm Voigt , who by means of a previously at an old clothes dealer in Potsdam acquired uniform on October 6, 1906 as captain spent and a troop of authoritarian loyal soldiers under his command provided . They took the S-Bahn together from Berlin-Tegel to Cöpenick , a small provincial town in Brandenburg just outside Berlin. Once there, he had the soldiers march to the town hall of the then town, arrested the mayor and had the officials there hand over the town treasury, with the contents of which he finally disappeared.
Wilhelm Voigt would like to be a righteous subject, but he failed because of the daily bureaucratic vicious circle. The undocumented shoemaker, with a criminal record for minor offenses, will be denied residence permits as long as he is unemployed. However, he can only find work if he has a residence permit. In order to get his passport back and thus to be recognized again as a person before the state and the law, he goes into a fight against the windmills of strict legal requirements and the absurd official mentality. A captain's uniform of the Prussian Guard Regiment repeatedly crosses his path , which ultimately gives him a mischievous solution. As captain von Köpenick , he finally beats those who are loyal to order and who obey authority with their own weapons.

The music of the musical Der Hauptmann von Köpenick follows on from the listening habits of the turn of the century around 1900 in Berlin and is played exclusively with a small live orchestra. The songs range from morality songs, popular songs, musicals and large polyphonic ensemble numbers, peppered with musical and textual quotations from Kurt Weill, Johann Strauss and Heinrich Zille, to " close harmony " singing and jazz music in the style of the 1920s.
Since its premiere in 2015, the Moritatenlied "In der Spree schwimm eene Leiche" has been the prologue of the musical with which the composer Heiko Stang expressed his criticism of Berlin's cultural policy . At performances outside Berlin from 2019, the Moritatenlied will no longer precede the musical as a prologue.
