The film is based on the one hand on Hannes Holm's own life and on the other loosely on the memoir Ursäkta, mittn är Broman by Fleming Broman, who gained fame with the Sandhamnsligan in 1975 . Peter Dale's role Gösta is loosely modeled on Fleming.

action

Martin lives as a working-class child in Liding and is the son of an alcoholic who bullies his poor family. His best friend Micke comes from the best family and his family invites Martin to accompany him to Sandhamn , where he can work in the "KSSS Segelhotel" in order to earn some extra money. But the work turns out differently than expected and is as hard as its boss Gösta seems unfair. Anyone caught drunk by Gösta will be sent home. But he also meets the beautiful Jenny, and they both get closer at an evening party. But luck does not last long, because Gösta notices that someone stole beer from him, which is why Martin poses as the sole thief and is sent home. But when he is about to travel home, he is intercepted by Gösta and asked to run an errand or two for him. And so he carries out a drug handover in the city and notices how Gösta is involved in other drug deals, brothels and gambling.

Meanwhile, Jenny is happy that Martin has not left, but quickly notices that he is now working for Gösta and distances herself greatly from him. Martin, on the other hand, earns Gösta's trust and works more and more for him, which ultimately pays off more and more. Meanwhile, he also falls in love with Jenny and is shocked when he believes that she is his girl, which is why he immediately toyed with the idea of not working for Gösta anymore. But before he can get out, the police appear, which is why he panics and destroys all drugs. And that's exactly why he is beaten up by Gösta's business partners. Jenny finds him badly injured and takes care of him. In the process, they both get closer and start kissing. But Martin makes the mistake of asking what relationship Jenny has with Gösta. Jenny gets angry and tells him that he is his father.

This leads to Martin later showing up drunk in Gösta's restaurant and making him a scene. But Gösta throws him out and recommends him to sleep over it first. The next morning he tries to convince him that he needs him because he trusts him, but Martin has long since approached Jenny and forges with her the plan to disappear together. However, Martin is caught beforehand by the police who observed Gösta's machinations for a summer and now want to strike with Martin's help. He reluctantly agrees and lets himself be bugged. But instead of handing him over to the police, he secretly shows Gösta his microphone, and Gösta is so impressed by Martin's behavior that he speaks into the microphone, takes all the guilt, gives Martin a warm hug, gives him money and knowing that he is caught hand over the microphone to the police the next morning.

In the end, despite other promises, Martin is also put in jail, but Micke's father, who is a lawyer, later gets him out of jail. Martin then returns home, where he received a letter from Jenny, who previously fled alone, knocks out his drunken father and then travels to Jenny.

criticism

Karoline Eriksson gave the film four out of six stars in the Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet . She also said that Hannes Holm orientated himself with his embarrassing situations to the Swedish director Måns Herngren . In addition, Bill Skarsgård is a “solid protagonist” who carries the story and gives his character “a strong natural presence that radiates depth”. However, she also criticized Holm's disorientation because he apparently did not know "which film he actually wanted to make".

Jan-Olov Andersson also gave the film four stars in the Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet and said that Holm's film casts a “nostalgic look into the 1970s in Sweden”. And in addition to a "brilliant Peter Dalle ", Andersson saw the strength of the film in "a series of intimate and interesting portraits and the exact description of a time that will come back."

In the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter , Helena Lindblad said that Holm cast a “deep look into the collective memory of an innocent time”. And although the comedian Peter Dalle "has some funny one-liners, [...] the film is much more serious than satirical." She particularly praised Dalle for playing a wonderful criminal in this "nostalgic film [about] the lying Sandhamn " .

In the Hollywood Reporter , Ray Bennett praised Bill Skarsgård, who looks big and captivating with his “fresh face”. However, he also criticized the fact that on the one hand Holm undermined the satire and on the other hand the scene at the end of the film was only "half-hearted".

In Variety magazine, John Anderson praised the film craft around the cameraman, the setting and the composer who managed to capture the music of Sweden from the 1970s without mentioning ABBA . He also praised Holm, who could "lead a solid cast with a delicate hand".

background

In this film, the director Hannes Holm processes not only a part of his own life, but also parts of the true story of the Sandhamnsligan , a group that traded drugs in the posh town of Sandhamn in the 1970s . Holm himself grew up as a childminder and also worked for a criminal in his youth. The research on the Sandhamnsligan was stopped after only a short time. After interviewing 10 different people in Sandhamn, Holm noticed how many partly contradicting stories and perspectives there were on the case, so he decided to write his own story and use the facts as he pleased. Fleming Broman also met Holm and on the one hand gave him the script to read and on the other hand spoke to him about the time.

In order to play with the audience's expectations, the director Hannes Holm decided right at the beginning to show a blowjob with a fake penis. He really wanted to show this to show that the film was unpredictable. Bill was not naked during the filming, but sat there in underwear with the penis stuck on. The dummy looked so real that a neighbor of the leading actor Bill Skarsgård thought he was a psychopath when he went home with the play because he thought Bill was handling severed body parts.
