Cover of the English version

The catalog is a summary of eight albums by the Düsseldorf band Kraftwerk , which were released between 1974 and 2003. The sound of the albums was restored and digitally remastered. They appeared in the formats vinyl record and compact disk. The scrapbook was published in German and in English (The Catalog) in October 2009. In 2012, on the occasion of the 3D retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, a limited special edition of the English version was published in a black box. In addition, a German-language version of the black special edition was published at the end of 2012 on the occasion of the repetition of the retrospective in the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen .

Emergence

The plans for an artistically revised compilation of the albums in CD format go back to 2004. The illustrations of the graphically slightly modified albums for the scrapbook were made public on the band's website in the catalogs department at that time. Originally, the title 12345678 was intended as eight albums were put together for a joint release. The release was planned for 2004, 30 years after the album Autobahn , but was repeatedly postponed.

“We've been digitally transferring all of Kraftwerk's original recordings and sound sources from our badly degrading master tapes while our engineers, Fritz and Henning, have been working in parallel to remaster our early albums for re-release. So for the first time, our recordings will be available in crisp, clear Kling Klang sound with all the fold-out covers and images our label at the time either messed up or wouldn't pay for. There will be some alternate mixes of tracks and some unedited versions, but unfortunately we don't have much unreleased material. We never recorded extra songs or twenty different versions of the same song. We would complete a song and then move forward, always keeping very focused on one Kling Klang project at a time. "

reception

Tom Ewing from Pitchfork Media awarded 9.5 out of ten points. He wrote that Kraftwerk were one of the few bands that captured in their music what interacting with machines really felt like. By telling this story in its own context, The Catalog would do a great service to this remarkable talent.

Andy Kellman from Allmusic rated it 5 out of 5 stars. He describes the compilation as "a crucial and complex series for electronic music".
