The Monk and the Fish is a 1994 French animated short film directed by Michael Dudok de Wit .

action

A monk is sitting by the artificial lake of the monastery when suddenly a fish jumps out of the water. The monk rushes off and fetches a bucket and a pole to catch the fish. However, this is too fast for the monk, who now tries a fishing net. He repeatedly falls into the water while hunting, but cannot catch the fish in the water either. When he wants to show the fish to the other monks in the monastery, they do not show up.

The monk can no longer rest. Unable to concentrate on studying the scriptures, he sneaks out of the dormitory at night to catch the fish by candlelight. In the end, he stubbornly pursues the fish around the world, past canals by the pyramids and down water terraces in Asia, until he is spiritually reconciled with the fish: Both are carried into the air, come into contact here for the first time and float away together.

production

The monk and the fish was animated with Indian ink and gouache on cels . The score is based on an interpretation of Arcangelo Corelli's La Folia .
