action

In addition to around 5,000 rolls, fresh fruit and vegetables from the Hamburg wholesale market, mostly alcohol is sold there. On six weekends, Spiegel TV author Markus Grün documented the daily routine there. He met dock workers from the jetties , former Kiez thugs, survivors and bargain hunters .

Production and publication

The four-part report was shot in 2006 and first broadcast in January 2007 as part of the Spiegel TV report on Sat.1 . After 13 years, the report is to be continued again in 2020.

breakthrough

At the beginning of 2020, excerpts from the report were uploaded as memes on Instagram , which spread very quickly and quickly received several million views. The report also became popular and now has around 11 million views on YouTube . In particular, the homeless Harald Krull gained great popularity with the audience, as he pretended to be a sea captain and to have studied at Harvard University .

criticism

The portrayals of alcoholics and homeless people with the ironic comments of the narrator that ridicule the blows of fate of those affected are largely criticized. Matthias Dell from Deutschlandfunk compared the documentary series with a “90 minute meme”.
