The asparagus ( spelling : DER ASPARAGUS ) is the school newspaper of the Erich-Kästner - Gymnasium in Laatzen near Hanover founded in 1989 by the then student Marcus Schwarze and the art teacher Wolfgang Dippel .

history

In 1989 the school magazine was founded by some black students. The title topic of the first issue was the headmaster Stumme, who was shown mounted in front of a sentry box with the quote: “I am not humorless” . The reason was his practice of greeting late students with a handshake. The German and art teacher "Kalle" Bertram von Dippel soon took on the role of lead teacher. In 1995, as a result of the Spiegel asparagus affair with the magazine Der Spiegel , Der Spargel became known beyond the boundaries of its sphere of activity. Since it was founded in 1989, The Asparagus has been published twice a year, with an average number of 72 pages and a circulation of 500. In addition, an online edition has appeared since March 2012 with additional content that is not available in the print edition. The school newspaper also publishes critical reports on federal and state politics, articles on regional social and political affairs and comments on current cultural trends among young people.

Federal Minister of Labor Ursula von der Leyen , former Chancellor Helmut Kohl and Gerhard Schröder , Federal Minister of Health Philipp Rösler , Lower Saxony's Interior Minister Uwe Schünemann , Greens Chairman Cem Özdemir , former Federal Environment Minister, among others . D. Jürgen Trittin and Roberto Blanco interviewed. On this topic, Der Spargel organized an anniversary exhibition in September 2009 entitled “We thank you for the conversation - 20 years of ASPARAGUS interviews”, for which regional politicians, as well as the founding fathers and former editors of Der Spargel appeared.

The "SPIEGEL-ASPARAGUS Affair"

Due to the so-called Spiegel-Asparagus Affair , the magazine became known nationwide in 1995. After the ASPARAGUS went bankrupt in 1992, it was revived in 1994 by three students together with the German teacher Bertram. As early as 1995, the issue “50 Years Later” was voted the best school magazine in Lower Saxony. The ASPARAGUS, which with its cover more than resembled the SPIEGEL, sent this message to the advertising department of the SPIEGEL together with an advertisement offer. The idea was to win new SPIEGEL readers with ASPARAGUS. After a few questions, an answer finally came, but not from the advertising department as expected, but from SPIEGEL legal advisor Dietrich Krause. He calls for the design of the cover picture to be "changed by the end of the year so that it cannot (no longer) be mistaken for the SPIEGEL cover page!" After a few weeks of exchanging letters, the SPARGEL editorial team gave the exchange of letters to Leine-Nachrichten. This triggered a media storm. Before noon on the day on which the report appeared, the German press agency and several television stations called to get the latest information. Dozens of newspaper articles, television and radio reports followed. Dietrich Krause reacted by saying that negotiations should not be conducted through the media, but should be negotiated directly. 15 asparagus editors were invited to Hamburg to eat asparagus. The “heute journal” of ZDF, taff, RTL, Sat.1 and ARD reported on it.

“Just keep going as before!” Said Stefan Aust after five weeks of negotiations. The sentence faded away in the "Lila Salon", the noble canteen of the magazine and the editors were stunned. Not because of joy, as you might think, but out of disappointment: “We thought the attention that the threatened lawsuit brought was really great! Especially since we had the press on our side. 'Der SPIEGEL' had to take a lot of criticism because nobody understood why one sues such a small newspaper. We hired a lawyer who discussed the strategy with us: We didn't want to take anything back! We wanted to be sued and then we'll go in there and SPIEGEL will give in. We were disappointed! ”. The outcome of the proceedings is well known: Stefan Aust, editor-in-chief of the news magazine until last year, invited the Laatzener school newspaper editorial team to an ASPARAGUS meal in Hamburg, withdrew the lawsuit in front of the ZDF cameras and placed full-page advertisements in SPIEGEL for the following years ASPARAGUS. The Hamburg editorial team had to cancel the counter-invitation to the SPIEGEL egg meal in Laatzen due to deadlines. Incidentally, in the following year DER SPIEGEL initiated its first international school newspaper competition. A short time later, SPIEGEL held its first school newspaper competition and has since awarded the title “Best School Newspaper in Germany”, which Der Spargel won several times.
