The Day of the North Germans is an 18-hour television documentary about the residents of the NDR broadcasting area. It reports in real time on the everyday life of 121 protagonists from all federal states of the NDR broadcasting area. The shooting took place on May 11, 2012, the first broadcast took place on November 10, 2012. The Day of the North Germans is a project of all NDR programs; Radio Bremen is involved as a partner. The documentary for NDR was produced by TV Plus GmbH from Hanover under the direction of Michael Heiks. It was directed by Franziska Stünkel of Cita film. The subtitle and motto of the film is "Show us how you live!".

Preparations

There was a similar project in 2008 with the production of 24h Berlin - A Day in the Life by the RBB . After the call to apply for the production “The Day of the North Germans”, NDR and Radio Bremen received more than 1000 applications. Some of the participants were voted online at the beginning of 2012, with more than 350,000 votes cast by February 26th. The broadcasters themselves decided on another part.

Shooting day

The shooting for the production took place on Friday, May 11, 2012 from 6 a.m. to midnight. 100 NDR camera teams were scattered throughout the NDR broadcasting area and followed 121 people in their everyday lives at the same time. This resulted in over 700 hours of film material. The realization was carried out by TV Plus GmbH Fernsehproduktion from Hanover under the direction of producer Michael Heiks.

Post production

From the more than 700 hours of film material, a documentary film was edited over a period of five months under the direction of Franziska Stünkel and an editorial team. Private individuals could also send in material in which they could report on their everyday life on May 11th.

The producer Mousse T. from Hanover was responsible for the background music for the documentation . The Hamburg singer Oceana contributes with her song "Forever" to the title song of the day of the North Germans.

The production of the day of the North Germans was funded by the Nordmedia Mediengesellschaft and the film funding for Lower Saxony and Bremen.

Charisma

The first broadcast of the North German Day took place on Saturday, November 10, 2012 from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on NDR television in real time. The day of the North Germans was presented by the moderator Hinnerk Baumgarten . The documentation is divided into 17 one-hour blocks that always begin ten minutes past an hour. At 11:15 p.m., a 45-minute best-of block followed as the 18th block.
