Death is a master from Germany. The murder of the European Jews is a documentary film by the television journalist Lea Rosh and the historian Eberhard Jäckel , which required several years of research. The film was broadcast in four episodes of 90 minutes each beginning on April 29, 1990 on German television SFB / ARD. The title comes from the Death Fugue by Paul Celan : "Death is a master from Germany". The four films later became the basis of the book Death is a Master from Germany .

description

The documentary is a "collage of discussion, film scenes and historical material". The four television films describe the deportation and murder of European Jews who came from 17 European countries. The collaboration or refusal of the participating countries, which can be seen in the death rates of murdered Jews, is also examined. While only one percent of the Jews living there were murdered in Denmark, it was around 80 percent in Poland and the Netherlands. The participation of twelve countries under the leadership of Germany is described, such as the Soviet Union, Poland, Romania, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy, Norway, Hungary, Bulgaria, Austria and Rhodes.

Reviews

  • Walter Jens judged in the mirror : "It is the great merit of this film that it turns the audience into witnesses, yes, into potential actors."
