The merciless (original title: Lo spietato ) is a film drama by Renato De Maria , based on the 1995 novel Manager calibro 9: vent'anni di malavita a Milano nel racconto del pentito Saverio Morabito by Piero Colaprico and Luca Fazzo.

Santo Russo left rural Calabria with his family as a teenager and settled with them in Romano Banco , a suburb of Milan . During a 4 month incarceration by mistake, Santo befriends Slim, a boy from Calabria who is in jail for a series of robberies and develops an excellent relationship with him that will result in seedy business collaboration. It is the 1980s and Milan is booming, while a wave of violence and debauchery rises and Santo Russo rises to become one of Milan's most ambitious criminals.
