After the less than successful Nick Carraway moves to New York to try his luck there, he finds himself a neighbor of the wealthy Jay Gatsby. They both meet at one of Gatsby's famous parties. Gatsby uses this friendship to establish contact with his great love, Nick's cousin Daisy Buchanan. However, she has been married to Tom Buchanan, a wealthy polo player, for years. Tom is unfaithful, however, and meets regularly with Myrtle Wilson, wife of mechanic George Wilson. Gatsby tries everything to get Daisy back and they both have an affair for the time being. However, Daisy cannot fully surrender to him and Tom learns of the relationship. After an argument between Gatsby and Tom, Daisy is emotionally troubled and an accident occurs on the way home. Myrtle Wilson runs into the street and is hit by the car in which Daisy and Gatsby are sitting. Although Daisy was behind the wheel, Gatsby takes the blame for Myrtle's death. Tom convinces George Wilson that Gatsby was having an affair with Myrtle and is responsible for her death. Wilson locates Gatsby and shoots him on his estate before Wilson kills himself.
