In West German television in 1964 24 episodes were sent in irregular intervals from 6 June. The German synchro-title refers to the English-language original title; a deputy is the deputy or an officer of the marshal or sheriff . Guest stars included Johnny Cash , Robert Redford , Lee van Cleef and James Coburn . Except in the USA and Germany, the series was apparently only broadcast in Spain under the title El Comisario .

action

1880. Chief US Marshal Simon Fry is responsible for the Arizona Territory and resides in Silver City. Since he is constantly on the move in the territory, the young shop owner Clay McCord has been hired by him as a deputy, as Marshal Lamson is already relatively old and needs support. McCord is a good marksman but has a tense relationship with firearms , believing that violence in the Wild West stems from the use of firearms. In the business, Clay is supported by his sister Fran. In critical situations it is the one-eyed cavalry - Sergeant of the US Army "Hap" Tasker to help, the office provides Army in Silver City in a service.

Production notes

The plot of the series may have come from Anthony Mann's 1957 western The Star of the Law , in which Fonda plays a bounty hunter who teaches the inexperienced sheriff of a small town the basics of his trade. The series was created at the height of western TV productions such as A Thousand Miles of Dust , At the Foot of the Blue Mountains , Bonanza , Smoking Colts or Bronco . It was first broadcast on the same day as Bonanza .

Although Fonda, who also moderates the series and speaks the opening and closing credits, is considered the lead actor, he appeared in less than half of the episodes as part of the storyline, so that Allen Case (1934-1986) as the "second man" de facto is the main actor.

Lore

It is not yet known whether the series was broadcast again in Germany after it was first broadcast. A complete DVD edition in the English original was published in 2010. It is also unclear whether the German synchronized versions are (still) archived at all .
