biography

Single Fever by Peggy Lee with Jack Marshall's arrangement on Capitol Records (1958)

Born in El Dorado in 1921, Marshall began playing the ukulele at the age of 10 . After graduating from high school , he played in several bands in and around Los Angeles . For seven years he played in the orchestra of the MGM film studios. Among other things, he directed the orchestra and composed for several films.

Marshall became one of the most important music producers at Capitol Records in the late 1950s to 1960s and worked there as a music director from time to time, not just in the field of jazz. He released a number of solo albums highlighting his fingerstyle jazz on guitar. He was friends with Howard Roberts and Jack Sheldon and produced several of their albums under Capitol Records. Marshall wrote his own arrangements , many for a big band . He was the arranger for Peggy Lee's Fever , which was first attributed to Lee himself.

Marshall composed the theme song and background music for the 1960s television series The Munsters and the 1966 film Munster, Go Home! ( Ghost party ). In 1965 the theme song was nominated for a Grammy . He has also composed for the films The Missouri Traveler (1958), Thunder Road (1958), The Giant Gila Monster (1959) and Kona Coast (1968) as well as for the western television series The Deputy ( The Second Man ) with Henry Fonda , The Investigators and The Debbie Reynolds Show .

Marshall's role models included the guitarist and pioneer of European jazz Django Reinhardt and the classical guitarist Andrés Segovia , who had a great influence on the development of classical guitar playing in the 20th century.
