Derek Ezra, Baron Ezra

Derek Ezra, Baron Ezra MBE (born February 23, 1919 - † December 22, 2015 ) was a British politician ( Liberal Democrats ), manager and economic functionary.

Life and career

Ezra was born on February 23, 1919 to David and Lily Ezra. He attended Monmouth School in Monmouth , Monmouthshire , Wales . He graduated from Magdalene College of Cambridge University with a Master of Arts .

He joined the Liberal Party in 1936 while studying at Cambridge . He was a member of the Cambridge University Liberal Club , whose newsletter he published from 1937 to 1938.

Ezra served in the British Army during World War II and the post-war years up to 1947 . From 1947 he worked for the National Coal Board . From 1952 to 1956 he was a member of the British delegation to the European Coal and Steel Community (Montanunion).

At the National Coal Board , Ezra was Regional Sales Manager from 1958 to 1960 , Director General Marketing from 1965 to 1967 and Board Member from 1965 to 1982, Deputy Chairman of the Board from 1967 to 1971 and Chairman of the Board of Management from 1971 to 1982. Ezra was a director of Redland plc from 1982 to 1989 and of Solvay SA from 1979 to 1989 . From 1990 to 1999 he worked for the Energy and Technical Services Group plc . From 2000, he worked for Micro Power Ltd .

He was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of Associated Heat Services plc from 1966 to 1999 and Industrial Advisor to Morgan Grenfell from 1982 to 1987 .

From 1976 to 1978 Ezra was a member of the British Institute of Management . From 1981 to 1986 he was President of the Coal Industry Society and from 1987 to 1992 President of the Coal Institute of Trading Standards Administration . From 1983 to 1987 he was Chairman of the British Iron & Steel Consumers' Council .

Ezra died on December 22, 2015 at the age of 96.

Membership in the House of Lords

Ezra was named a Life Peer as Baron Ezra, of Horsham in the County of West Sussex on February 2, 1983 . He gave his inaugural address in the House of Lords on March 2, 1983. In the House of Lords , he mainly advocated energy issues and was the Liberal Democrats' spokesman for energy issues from 1998 to 2005.

From 2001 he was first regularly present, later only rarely because of his age and declining health. He last took part in a vote on June 18, 2008. He took part in debates to the end.

Working in public

Ezra was a patron (saint) of Combustion Engineering Association . This organization awards the Derek Ezra Award, named after him, for “outstanding achievements in research into combustion technology”. In 2003, Ezra presented the Valentina Cvoro Prize for excellence in the study of combustion technology.

Ezra has spent the past few years studying the impact of the environment on clean coal technology and the problem of energy poverty. He also founded a company that is committed to promoting alternative electricity generation.

Honors

Ezra was awarded the 1945 Bronze Star of the United States awarded. In the same year he became a member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). In 1974 he became a Knight Bachelor . Ezra was honored with the Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1979. In the same year he received an honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) degree from Cranfield University . In 1981 he was honored with the officer of the Legion of Honor and in the same year with the Commander of the Order of Merit of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg . In 1981 he received an honorary doctorate in law (LL.D.) from the University of Leeds .

He was an Honorary Fellow of Magdalene College . Ezra was also a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers and the Worshipful Company of Fuellers .

Ezra married Julia Elizabeth Wilkins in 1950, who died before him.
