Derek Smith (born October 13, 1984 in Belleville , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who was last under contract with the KHL Medveščak Zagreb from the Continental Hockey League .
Career
Derek Smith began his career as a hockey player with the Wellington Dukes, for which he was active from 2000 to 2004 in the Ontario Junior Hockey League . He then attended Lake Superior State University for three years , for whose ice hockey team he played parallel in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association . On April 12, 2007, the defense attorney signed a free agent contract with the Ottawa Senators . For their farm team Binghamton Senators he played regularly in the American Hockey League from 2007 to 2011 and won the Calder Cup with the team in the 2010/11 season . He also played a game for the Elmira Jackals from the ECHL during this period . From 2009 to 2011 he was on the ice in a total of eleven games for the Ottawa Senators in the National Hockey League , but initially could not assert himself there.
For the 2011/12 season Smith moved within the NHL to the Calgary Flames , where he scored two goals and nine assists in 47 games in his first year.
In 2014 Smith moved to the ZSC Lions in the National League A , where he spent a season before returning to North America and joining the Arizona Coyotes . They used him for the time being with their AHL farm team, the Springfield Falcons , before he returned to Europe in summer 2016 and signed a contract with KHL Medveščak Zagreb .
In the 2016/17 season, Smith tested positive for doping and banned from the world association until September 2018.
