Derrick Sullivan (born August 10, 1930 in Newport , † August 31, 1983 ) was a Welsh football player . He played for the Welsh national football team .

Athletic career

Sullivan made his debut for Cardiff City in English professional football in April 1948 when the Welsh club met Newcastle United in the Second Division . In particular due to his versatility on the defensive, he quickly became a regular for the second division team, for whom he played until 1961. In 1953 he received his first "cap", the hat presented by the association for an international match , when he won the 3-2 win over Ireland with goals from Trevor Ford and two-time goalscorer John Charles in the British Home Championship - and thus de qualification for the 1954 World Cup - for the first time for the Welsh team. Five years later he was part of the squad of the selection team that advanced to the quarter-finals of the 1958 World Cup and only failed because of the later titleholder Brazil . In 1959 he played his 17th and last international match against Scotland again as part of the British Home Championship.

In 1961, Sullivan moved to Exeter City in the Fourth Division before moving on to league rivals AFC Newport County the following year . From 1963 he succeeded in non-league football at Hereford United and the Ebbw Vale AFC .
