Derwin Alonzo James (* 3. August 1996 in Dundee , Florida ) is an American American football player at the position of the safeties . He played college football for Florida State and has been with the Los Angeles Chargers in the National Football League (NFL) since 2018 .

college

James was born in Dundee , Florida in 1996 and grew up in Haines City , where he attended high school, then played college football from 2015 to 2017 . He attended Florida State University , where he played for Florida State Seminoles in the NCAA Division I FBS.

In his first season he was able to establish himself as a starter with 91 tackles , of which 9.5 for loss of space, 4.5 sacks , 5 defended passes and two forced and two conquered fumbles and was subsequently considered one of the best defensive players of his year. In his second season he injured himself after two games and was out with a meniscus tear for the remainder of the season. In his third and final season, he was able to build on his performance from the first year.

In total, he came to 186 tackles in three seasons, including 15 for loss of space, 5.5 sacks, 15 defended passes, three interceptions and two forced fumbles.

NFL

James was selected by the Los Angeles Chargers as second safety in the first round and 17th player overall in the 2018 NFL Draft . With the Chargers he signed a four-year contract for $ 12.39 million.

In his rookie season, he ran from the first game against the Kansas City Chiefs , in which he defended two passes, set three tackles and he managed a sack , as a starter for the Chargers. On December 18, 2018, James, who led his team in these statistics with 93 tackles, was nominated for the 2019 Pro Bowl .

Because of a foot injury while training in August 2019, James was out for several months. James was not used again until matchday 12. In the remaining five games, he was able to set 33 tackles and block a pass.
