Despe e Siga were a Portuguese Ska / garage rock - band from Lisbon .

history

Since the summer of 1992, the musicians of the well-known punk band Peste & Sida (German: Pest and Aids) began to play concerts in small clubs and bars, where they did not appear under their names, but played cover versions of their personal favorite songs, from bands such as The Ramones , The Clash , The Beatles , The Specials , etc. a. The new band performed regularly, especially from 1994, under the name Despe & Siga (German for: undress and carry on), as an onomatopoeic, ridiculous corruption of the band name Peste & Sida. In the same year her debut album was released, which was dominated by Ska, but also featured rock 'n' roll and beat pieces. The happy Festa , a ska version of The Pogues song Fiesta , became the best-known song on the album as a single, especially because of the description of a backyard festival with a lot of Vinho Verde by the Casal Garcia brand. The band gained a wider audience, especially at the big semester graduation parties , the Queima das Fitas .

On their second album Os Primos (German: Die Cousins) the group recorded mostly their own pieces in 1996, with Sérgio Godinho on Tou Bom (German: I'm in a good mood). In addition to Ska pieces, such as the popular TV Ska , garage rock and beat / rock 'n' roll songs played a part. The band gave numerous concerts, including some in Paris and Canada. Their third album 99.9 showed numerous Madness emoluments and ska and dub influences. In addition to happy, carefree songs, there were occasional more reflective nuances in some of the songs, as well as some electronic elements. The album contained only self-written pieces, and his best-known song, along with Radio Ska , was the quieter pop piece Manual do Gelo (English: manual of the ice). It was the single on the album and had references to Britpop bands like Oasis , especially in its anthemic choruses .

After that the activities of the band decreased, especially after the departure of three members in 2000. In 2004 San Payo got out. The band has been disbanded since the mid-2000s. At the same time, Peste & Sida, with San Payo, have made a new start since 2004 and recorded several new albums. Luís Varatojo, one of the most influential members in both bands, has not returned to Peste & Sida, but has turned to other projects, such as A Naifa .
