The 2008/09 season was the 34th season of the Austrian Chess League . The chess club Jenbach , SK Husek Wien and SV St. Veit an der Glan had moved up from the 2nd Bundesliga . While St. Veit an der Glan, together with SK Absam and Union Ansfelden, went straight down again, Jenbach managed to stay up. SK Husek Wien, somewhat surprisingly, secured the championship title ahead of defending champion SK Baden .

For the last time this season the number of board points and before the number of team points decided on the placements; in this there was also the three-point rating for the last time , i.e. three points for a win and one point for a draw.

For the reported team squads of the participating clubs, see team squad of the Austrian 1st Bundesliga in chess 2008/09 .
