Detlef Engel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Detlef Engel (born January 13, 1940 in Berlin ) is a former German pop singer .

Life

Detlef Engel is the son of the xylophone player Kurt Engel , who worked as a teacher at a music college and was a well-known soloist. His father let him study piano and composition and sent him to take singing lessons with Wagner singer Elsa Varena, whose pupils included René Kollo . However, Engel was enthusiastic about rock 'n' roll and Elvis Presley , whose title he secretly sang on tapes. In 1958 he made his first record at Bertelsmann Schallplattenring , a follow-up to the Peter Kraus hit Sugar Baby .

EP titled Sugar Baby , 1958

When Engel broke off his music studies after four semesters, his father recommended him to Werner Müller , the head of the RIAS dance orchestra. Müller was also a producer at Teldec (Telefunken-Decca), where the young artist received a record deal in 1959. The record company wanted to set up Engel as the German Ricky Nelson . In the same year which was Fleetwood - cover MisterBlue big hit. With this title, Detlef Engel came to seventh place on the charts and left Gerhard Wendland , who had recorded the same title, far behind.

Engel was firmly established in the hit business, completed numerous tours, appeared on television and received film roles , for example in hit parade 1960 and The Riddle of the Green Spider (both 1960). In 1961 he appeared with the title After Midnight at the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest . However, the winner of the competition was Lale Andersen with the song We'll meet again . In accordance with the contract, Telefunken produced four records a year with Detlef Engel, but no more big top ten hits could be achieved. Five titles were still in the top 50, but it was no longer enough for top positions. On the other hand, the six duet records with Gerd Böttcher , which had been published on the Decca label of Teldec since 1961 , were more successful . The title Because you are my great love , after the Neapolitan folk song Santa Lucia , rose to eighth place in the leaderboards.

With the beginning of the Beat era, Detlef Engel's music career was over, with the exception of two releases in 1966 and 1972. He married and took up a job at the Berlin waterworks . In the first half of the 1980s he brought out his last single under the motto "Mister Blue is back" without success. In the course of the rock 'n' roll revival in the 1980s and 1990s, a large part of Detlef Engels Teldec recordings were re-released on LP and CD .
