Since then he has been a senior professor . Christian Drosten became his successor at the Institute of Virology .

research

His research interests include the molecular epidemiology , diagnostics and immunoprophylaxis of infections with new viruses ("emerging viruses"), hantaviruses , mechanisms of reactivation and pathogenesis of viral infections in immunosuppressed patients including their therapeutic effects, human cytomegalovirus , hepatitis B virus and researched the mode of action of genetic engineering enzymes ( restriction endonucleases ).

Opinions

Swine flu

On April 28, 2009, he told Tagesschau.de about the " swine flu " that one shouldn't panic, a normal flu epidemic would be worse. "Just for comparison: on average, up to 20,000 people die each year in Germany from the" normal "annual flu. Only a few have died from the swine flu. If you put that into perspective, it is really incomprehensible why there is so much excitement now prevails. "

Covid-19 pandemic

With regard to the assessment of the Covid 9 pandemic 2019/2020, Krüger was of the opinion in an interview with Moritz Gathmann that it was a phenomenon comparable to the flu wave. Measures would have to be justified on the basis of an overall assessment of the consequences, not just on the basis of the virological perspective. "To this day, we in Germany have significantly more deaths from flu or from infections acquired in hospital than from the corona virus. That seems to be completely ignored in the public debate." He demanded that the "broken saving" in clinics in Germany must finally come to an end. The current situation shows how important functioning clinics and qualified medical staff are.
