Detmar Wilhelm Soemmerring

Detmar Wilhelm Soemmerring (born June 27,  1793 in Frankfurt am Main ; † August 14, 1871 there ) was a German doctor .

Life

Soemmerring was born in 1793 to Samuel Thomas von Soemmerring and the painter and engraver Margarethe Elisabeth Soemmerring . After his mother died in 1802, Carl Ritter , who worked for a befriended family, became his tutor. In 1811, Ritter traveled to Geneva with Soemmerring and one other student to train them there. Soemmerring went to Göttingen as early as 1812 to study medicine. In 1816 he wrote his doctorate there on the anatomy of the eye. After completing his studies, he stayed with his father in Munich for some time and published two scientific papers there. From 1819 he worked as a doctor in Frankfurt. His skills as an ophthalmologist were particularly popular. He lived in Frankfurt until his death in 1871.

He took an active part in scientific life in Frankfurt, around 1824 he was a co-founder of the Physikalischer Verein and worked for Dr. Senckenberg Foundation .

In 1828 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Soemmerring had married the daughter of the doctor Karl Wenzel . Together they had a son, Karl Soemmerring, who worked as an architect. His only grandson Adolph Soemmerring died childless as a student in 1885.

Like his father, Soemmerring was artistically gifted and drew pictures for his own publications.
