history

Center Panthéon of the University of Paris 1

In 1990, the Cologne university professor Ulrich Hübner and his French colleague Michel Fromont founded a joint study program for the subject of law, which, after four years of study, leads to the acquisition of two degrees: the French Maîtrise en droit (mention droits français et allemand) from the University of Paris 1 and the Magister Legum (Cologne / Paris 1) (abbreviated: LL.M. (Cologne / Paris 1) ), specially created for the course , awarded by the University of Cologne. The course is started by a group of almost 60 students, equally German and French, at the University of Cologne and continued after two years in Paris. Accordingly, the 43 first-year graduates finished their studies in the 1994 summer semester.

In the following years the number of participants and the course of the course were largely retained. After Ulrich Hübner died on August 3, 2008, shortly after his retirement at the age of 65, Professors Barbara Dauner-Lieb, Thomas von Danwitz and Claus Kreß , whose office was shortly afterwards passed on to Martin Henssler, took over the management of the program ; at the University of Paris 1, this is now held by David Capitant.

In 2009, as part of the Bologna Process , the program was transformed into a four-year bachelor's degree, which can optionally be followed by a one-year master's degree in Cologne or Paris; the basic structural features of the program were retained.

On March 13, 2010, the 20th anniversary of the course was celebrated with a ceremony in Cologne under the patronage of the North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister Jürgen Rüttgers and the French Minister for Higher Education and Research Valérie Pécresse .

Structure of the program

Since the winter semester 2008/2009, the program has consisted of three phases:

  • a two-year course at the University of Cologne,
  • a two-year course at the University of Paris 1 and
  • optionally a one-year master’s degree at one of the two universities.

After four years, the Bachelor of Laws, LL.B. (Cologne / Paris 1) and the French Maîtrise awarded. The fifth year enables the acquisition of the Master of Laws, LL.M. (Cologne / Paris 1) . Completion of the program also leads to passing the intermediate examination of the law course of the University of Cologne and the French License en droit ; In Cologne, the course can also be credited as a focus area for the legal state examination .

The approximately 60 participants in the program each year, who come in equal parts from Germany and France, are selected by the university in their home country before the start of their studies (in the winter semester of each year) by means of a language test from around a hundred applicants on the German side alone and complete it entire course together. While they mostly attend lectures in Cologne, which are also part of the basic studies of the law course, a special study program is being completed at the University of Paris 1, which also includes students of French- Spanish , French- Italian , French- British and French- American courses attend the university. Accordingly, the students in Paris are looked after as part of the other binational courses, while in Cologne they are handled by an office specifically responsible for the course.

Graduates

Of the meanwhile almost 800 graduates of the program, after completing their studies, 42% work in law firms, 28% in companies and 11% in a ministry or in administration. 6% each later work for a research institution or international organization .

Since 1992, the German Association of Jurists of German and French Law e. V. (JDFR) and the French Association des Juristes Paris - Cologne (JPC) have two alumni associations which, among other things, publish a yearbook together with previous graduates.
