The German-Portuguese Society eV (DPG) is an association for the promotion and deepening of knowledge and friendly relations between the two countries Germany and Portugal and their people. The friendship society was founded in Cologne in 1964 and is now based in Berlin .

Regional structure

The association has a total of eleven regional associations in the federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Bremen, Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony and Thuringia as well as in the three major regions of Berlin / Brandenburg, Hamburg / Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. There are also 15 city and regional sections nationwide.

In Portugal there are three national associations, Central , Madeira and Algarve .

history

The German-Portuguese Society (DPG) was founded on May 6, 1964 on the premises of Otto Wolf Eisenhandel in Cologne . Founding members were u. a. Otto Wolff von Amerongen (first president), Manfred Zapp (first managing director), supported by Joseph Piel , linguist from the Universities of Cologne and Coimbra , and the ambassador of the Republic of Portugal in Bonn , Manuel Homem de Mello. The society initially had 67 members. It was entered in the Cologne Register of Associations in 1966.

On April 24, 1974, left-wing military with the participation of the population ended the Portuguese dictatorship of the Estado Novo with the Carnation Revolution . On December 4, 1974, the Portugal- GDR society was founded in Lisbon . The first president was Joao Freitas Branco (State Secretary for Culture), while Alexandre Babo (writer and theater director) was Vice-President.

In 1976 the West German DPG changed the name to "German-Lusitan Society eV - Sociedade Luso-Alemá (DLG)". President was Otto Wolf von Amerongen. In 1977 the DLG was entered in the Cologne Register of Associations. In 1980 the name was again changed to “Deutsch-Portugiesische Gesellschaft eV”, as “ Lusitanian ” led to misunderstandings among the German public.

On November 30, 1984, the "German Society for the African States of the Portuguese Language (DASP)" was founded, and M. Kuder, Vice-President of the DPG, became its president. On May 6, 1989, the DPG celebrated its 25th anniversary at the Cologne Trade Fair . The Lord Mayor of Cologne, Gepa Maibaum , presented the DPG with the city of Cologne medal. On May 21, 1989 in Montargil ( Alentejo ) and Lisbon the first talks between the representatives of the DPG of the FRG and the GDR-Portugal society took place in order to agree on future cooperation. Alexandre Babo (Portugal), Peter and Marys Neufert (FRG), Inge Jank, Hans-Georg Jank and Harald Heinke (GDR) take part.

On January 16, 1990, the German-Portuguese Society was re-established in the GDR. President was Klaus Steiniger . It had 530 members in five regional groups.

On May 30, 1990 in Berlin, DPG President Peter Neufert was a guest at the newly founded German-Portuguese Society of the GDR, reception by President Steiniger. On July 7, 1990, the DPG held a general public assembly in the GDR, with a recommendation to the new board of directors that the merger of the two companies be prepared by October 1990. In the Schauspielhaus Berlin , the unification of the DPG of the FRG with the DPG of the GDR was completed on September 27, 1990 and an agreement was reached between the DPG presidents Neufert and Steiniger on equal cooperation.

The first all-German annual meeting of the DPG was on November 19, 1990 in Waldeck Castle , southwest of Kassel. Peter Neufert was elected President. On October 20, 1993 in Arraial Pataense ( Algarve ) the first national association of the DPG in Portugal was founded, President Helfried Rieske.

In January 1999 a DPG day took place at the International Green Week Berlin in cooperation with the Minister of Agriculture of Portugal and the icep (today aicep ). In January 2000 the first issue of the membership magazine "DPG-REPORT Portugal" appeared.

On October 5, 2000, at the world exhibition EXPO 2000 in Hanover, a DPG day took place in the Portugal pavilion (designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira and today in the Mondego shore park in Coimbra ). The invitation was given by the director of tourism from iecp, followed by a DPG meeting with the President of the Portuguese Parliament, Almeida Santos .

For the 40th anniversary in 2004, the DPG organized colloquia, meetings and celebrations. In 2007 the DPG convened for the first time a voluntary advisory board to promote and support the cause and attractiveness of the DPG, with representatives from business, science, politics and culture from both countries.

Four times a year the association publishes the journal DPG-Report, which also operates as Portugal Report.

The individual national associations and city and regional sections organize regular, annual or extraordinary meetings, culinary events (wine tastings, "Ronda dos Restaurantes", "Sardinhadas" /trad.Sardine barbecues), readings, Fado evenings, art exhibitions and participations Streets and territorial festivals.

In the premises of the law firm of Vice President Daniela Kreidler-Pleus in Ludwigsburg, the DPG operates a library with books from and about the lusophonic language area.

The association supports events that strengthen the human, scientific and cultural connections between Germany and Portugal, also in terms of European integration. This ranges from exchange projects to readings, exhibitions and colloquia to assistance in official bilateral events.
