Cosmopterix schmidiella is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe magnificent butterfly family (Cosmopterigidae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 9 to 10 millimeters. The head is golden metallic. The antennae are dark brown and have a subapical and apical section with about 6 white segments each. The two white sections are separated by about 10 dark brown segments. The thorax shines dark brown and has a golden metallic center line. The tegulae are golden. The drawing of the forewings is similar to that of Cosmopterix zieglerella , but differs in the uninterrupted, silvery and slightly purple-tinted hemline. It's white on the fringed scales at the apex . The hind wings are gray-brown.

In the male, the right brachium is spatulate and twisted. Distally it ends in a sharp point with subapical teeth. It is about three times as long as the left brachium. The blades are narrow and rounded at the base. The upper edge is strongly concave distally, the lower edge is only slightly concave. The caudal margin is strongly convex. The valvellae are narrow near the base, curved in the middle, and have a flat hump at the top. They taper apically and have a rounded apex. The aedeagus is bottle-shaped, the rear part flange-shaped.

In females, the rear edge of the 7th sternite has a protrusion in the middle. The 8th segment is about twice as wide as it is long. The ostium is rectangular with rounded corners and semicircular sclerotized edges. The sterigma is elongated oval and has a broad central crest. The ductus bursae is slightly shorter than the corpus bursae . The corpus bursae is wrinkled in a ring shape and provided with two equally large sickle-shaped signs.

Similar species

Cosmopterix schmidiella differs from the similar species Cosmopterix orichalcea by the single, white, subapical antenna section and the golden, shiny, obliquely outwardly extending band on the base of the forewing.

distribution

Cosmopterix schmidiella is native to Central and Southwestern Europe. The species is extinct in England . In the east the distribution area extends to the north of Iran . In Mongolia , Korea and Japan , the nominate form is represented by the subspecies Cosmopterix schmidiella mongoliella .

biology

The caterpillars develop on fence vetch ( Vicia sepium ), pea vetch ( Vicia pisiformis ), mountain pea ( Lathyrus linifolius ), blackening pea ( Lathyrus niger ) and spring pea ( Lathyrus vernus ). They live in a large space mine on the underside of the leaf between August and September. The mine often takes up the entire leaf area, the parenchyma is completely eaten. Dormant larvae lie in a web under the midrib of the leaf and are difficult to observe. Multiple larvae can develop on one plant. The caterpillars overwinter in an elongated, semi-transparent white cocoon . They pupate in May. The moths fly from late May to mid-June, according to another source from June to July.

Systematics

There are two known subspecies:

  • Cosmopterix schmidiella schmidiella Frey , 1856
  • Cosmopterix schmidiella mongoliella Sinev , 1980
