The Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation gGmbH is a non-profit foundation founded in 2015 and based in Frankfurt am Main . The German stock market has transferred its cultural commitment of the foundation, in particular in the areas of collecting, exhibiting and promoting contemporary photography. With the Art Collection Deutsche Börse , it has a collection that includes around 1,800 works by over 120 international artists.

In 1999 Deutsche Börse began collecting and promoting contemporary photography. In addition, she supported numerous photography projects of other institutions as a patron and sponsor.

Collect

The Art Collection Deutsche Börse is a collection of international contemporary photography. It includes around 1,800 works by 126 artists. The collection has existed since 1999 and has been continuously expanded since then. It is dedicated to the central themes of contemporary photography from the middle of the 20th century. The range of subjects ranges from landscape shots to portraits, still lifes and interiors to street photography. The Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation is responsible for the further development, presentation and maintenance of the Deutsche Börse art collection.

Collection artist

Classics of contemporary photography such as Stephen Shore , Paul Almasy , Bernd and Hilla Becher and their students - including Andreas Gursky , Candida Höfer and Thomas Ruff - enter into a dialogue with newer positions of young photo artists such as Pieter Hugo , Jessica Backhaus , Regine Petersen and Tobias Zielony . The most important representatives from the reporting sector include Barbara Klemm , Philip Jones Griffiths , Anja Niedringhaus and Thomas Hoepker .

Catalogs of the collection

To date, six illustrated books on the Art Collection Deutsche Börse have been published under the title “XL Photography”. Almost all works in the collection are presented with images, and texts introduce the work of each artist.

Exhibit

The Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation shows three to four exhibitions a year in the exhibition space at the corporate headquarters of Deutsche Börse in Eschborn . In addition to the changing exhibition program, the works also hang in the office space of the stock exchange and in other exhibition locations around the world. The exhibitions are often fed from the collections of Deutsche Börse and have thematic focuses such as "The Female Portrait" or "Human Nature". In addition, however, exhibitions from other institutions with which the foundation cooperates are shown again and again, including “Magnum Contact Sheets” and “Gordon Parks. I Am You ”. As part of the exhibition program, works by artists nominated for the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize , which is awarded jointly with The Photographers Gallery in London , will also be exhibited. In addition, works by the respective FOAM Talents of the Amsterdam Photography Museum are part of the exhibition program.

Promote

The foundation supports young artists in the form of awards, grants, exhibitions and collaborations with other institutions, such as the Foam Talents program of the FOAM Photography Museum Amsterdam. Other focal points are the support of exhibition projects of international museums and institutions as well as the expansion of platforms for scientific exchange via the medium.

Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize

The Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize is awarded annually to a contemporary photo artist who made a significant contribution to photography in Europe in the previous year in the form of an exhibition or publication. The award was launched in 1996 by the Photographer's Gallery London . Deutsche Börse has been the title sponsor of the £ 30,000 award since 2005 . Since the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation was founded in 2015, it has been a partner of the Photographers' Gallery and continues to award the award under its current title.

The candidates for the award are proposed by the Academy , a group of over 100 international photography experts. An international jury, which changes every year, then decides which four photographers will take part in the finalist exhibition. It then selects the winner from these finalists in a second meeting. The award ceremony will take place in the Photographers' Gallery London.

Promotion of young talent

Giving young artists the opportunity to present their works to a broader public and to accompany them on their way is one of the foundation's concerns. It promotes them through awards, grants and exhibitions. As an active partner, she is committed to the development of contemporary photography and cooperates with various cultural institutions. These include various funding programs, including the Foam Talents program of the FOAM Photography Museum Amsterdam.

Scientific dialogue

The foundation promotes scientific exchange on the subject of photography. Together with other partners, it develops formats and creates platforms that bring interested parties into a dialogue with artists, critics, curators and scientists. To do this, the foundation draws on an international cooperation network of museums, universities and other institutions. A series of events are organized on current topics in the photo scene, symposia and lectures are organized, and artists are invited to discussions with the public.

Exhibition cooperation

In addition to the exhibition program at the Deutsche Börse headquarters in Eschborn, the foundation is developing further collaborations with cultural institutions in Germany and abroad. In 2014, her art collection with works on the topic of "Human Nature" made a guest appearance at the NRW Forum Düsseldorf as part of the Düsseldorf Photo Weekend. Since the first edition of the RAY photography projects Frankfurt / Rhein Main in 2012, the Art Collection has also been an important partner of this new photo triennial. She is actively helping to shape RAY both through loans and as an exhibition space. As the curator of the collection, Anne-Marie Beckmann is a member of the RAY curator team. In cooperation with the Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt, the special exhibition on the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize was shown in 2015 and 2017 as part of RAY at MMK 3. The Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize was also on view in 2018 as part of RAY 2018 at MMK 3.
