The German Trade Show Munich took place from May 13, 1922 to October 8, 1922 and, four years after the end of the First World War, was intended to show the efficiency and quality of German handicrafts and German industry.

Goal setting

In 1912 took place in Munich already the Bavarian industrial exhibition held, but with a focus on the cultural dimensions to show Bavaria and Germany. In 1922, the exhibition was intended to prove that extensive industrial, craft and artistic work is being done in Germany, which is able to meet the highest and highest standards (Official Exhibition Guide). The inclusion of Austria in the German Trade Show was also to be understood as a conscious political statement .

planning

At the instigation of the Münchner Bundes eV , an initiative was founded in Munich in 1919 to hold a German trade show in the exhibition park on Theresienhöhe . On January 21, 1921, the city of Munich and various German organizations founded the Association for the Holding of the German Trade Show in Munich , Jakob Julius Scharvogel became President of the trade show .

exhibition

The German Trade Show presented itself as a taste-educational quality show. Admitted were "German work of the craft and industry, where the sense of form and creative power come into their own". The range of exhibitions covered as many areas as possible from industry and trade (cars, goldsmithing, stoves, wood carvings, leather furniture, sporting goods and much more). The logo of the exhibition was the 3 heads , a slightly expressionist poster designed by Max Eschle with three angular red heads staggered one behind the other and turned to the left. This motif was used, for example, on railway posters and as a seal mark for matchboxes. The picture was also used as a postage stamp for the Deutsche Reichspost . The Munich cigarette factory Zuban produced a special cigarette brand with the motif "Deutsche Gewerbeschau".

Result

The organizers already suggested that major events be held in the greater Munich area in order to attract an audience to the trade show. For example, the Oberammergau Passion Play, which was canceled in 1920, was held in 1922. During the exhibition, which lasted almost six months, it was visited by more than three million visitors, and the final bill showed an increase of over 12 million marks.
