The German Leukemia and Lymphoma Aid (DLH) is the federal association of self-help organizations to support adults with leukemia and lymphoma in Germany.

The purpose of the association is to advise and support patient organizations and those affected by cancer . In 2014 there were around 130 leukemia and lymphoma self-help initiatives in Germany and the neighboring German-speaking countries.

The German Cancer Aid Foundation is the patron of the DLH and supports the non-profit association financially and ideally within the framework of partnership. The aim is to further improve the supply network for people with cancer in the Federal Republic.

History and work of the association

The DLH was founded on May 27, 1995. Its partner organizations now also include the German Cancer Society , health insurance companies and over ten other health and specialist organizations. As a member of numerous committees, Leukemia Aid endeavors to influence health policy. It bundles the interests of leukemia and lymphoma patients vis-à-vis politics, health insurance companies, medical organizations and other institutions at a higher level . It is represented internationally in the “Lymphoma Coalition”, in the “Myeloma Patients Europe” network and in the “European Cancer Patient Coalition”. The DLH is a member of the Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft Selbsthilfe e. V. (BAG) as well as in the Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband e. V.

In 2010, the German Leukemia & Lymphoma Aid Foundation was founded

Board and membership

The federal executive board works on a voluntary basis and without compensation . It is based in the House of Cancer Self-Help in Bonn. In addition to the founding members, only the self-help organizations existing in the various regions of the Federal Republic whose purpose and task correspond to those of the Federal Association can become full members. The association levies fees for full members, natural sustaining members and legal sustaining members between 5 and 250 euros. The DLH member initiatives look after a total of around 25,000 victims and their families.

financing

One of the financing principles of DLH is that it refrains from financial support (donations, sponsoring, membership fees) from the pharmaceutical industry.

The financial basis essentially consists of third-party funding and membership fees. Private donations and inheritances are advertised. This is intended to preserve independence and neutrality in the interests of cancer patients. In 2013, the total budget was 822,718.10 euros. Deutsche Krebshilfe provided the largest funding with 580,000 euros.

Information work

A focus of the DLH is the information work about the diseases. The topics include medical questions such as diagnostic procedures, therapeutic standards, follow-up care, “alternative” therapies, stem cell transplantation, side effects, specialist clinics and specialists. However, this does not include any specialist medical advice. Social issues include rehabilitation , follow-up treatment , ID cards for the severely disabled and financial aid. The varied information material is provided free of charge. This also includes areas such as coping with illness, psycho-oncologists and enabling contact with other affected persons. Some information is also passed on by telephone. They can also be downloaded free of charge from the Internet .

Since 2017, the association has been offering increased participation in the cancer information network , which the German Cancer Aid and the German Cancer Society jointly support. According to the specialist topics, experts from the field of leukemia and lymphoma aid come to the team of advisors, who give cancer patients "advice from practice" free of charge.
