The German Seemannsmission in Hamburg r. V. is the oldest seaman's mission in Germany and today one of three evangelical mission associations in Hamburg . It was founded on June 15, 1891 and today operates a seaman's home with 120 beds in the immediate vicinity of the main church of St. Michaelis .

history

Former Seemannsheim Wolfgangsweg

The idea of founding your own seaman's missions originally came from England. In 1874 the Hamburg City Mission set up its own section for sailors for the first time, and in 1887 Pastor Ninck founded the first private seaman's home on Pinnasberg on St. Pauli .

In 1891 Julius Jungclaussen , who had previously gained experience in England and Wales, was appointed the first full-time seafarer pastor. In June of the same year an auxiliary committee for German seaman's missions was founded under the chairmanship of the senator and later mayor William Henry O'Swald . Other founding members included a. the then Chamber of Commerce President Rudolph Crasemann , Adolf Bernitt, Director of the Hamburg-Süd shipping company , and Guido Wolff, Director of Hapag .

In 1894, one floor of the seaman's home in Seewartenstrasse (today Hotel Hafen Hamburg ) was rented before the first own seaman's home was opened in Wolfgangsweg in 1906. Destroyed and rebuilt in the Second World War, it soon proved to be too small during the economic boom and was therefore replaced in 1959 by a new building in Krayenkamp.

Seaman's cemetery in Ohlsdorf

As early as 1923, at the instigation of the seaman's mission, a seaman's cemetery was set up in the Ohlsdorf cemetery .

Today there is close cooperation with the seaman's missions in Altona (founded in 1898) and Harburg (1910), which, in addition to another seaman's home in Altona, also operate the Duckdalben international seaman's club in Waltershof and three seafarers ' lounges in the city's cruise terminals . All three Hamburg seamen's missions are looked after and supported by the common seafarer's office of the North Church , which is also based in Altona.
