Julius Jungclaussen
Julius August Jungclaussen (also Jungclaußen , born May 1, 1854 in Rieseby , † February 1, 1921 in Holtenau ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran clergyman and co-founder of the German Seemannsmission .
Life
Jungclaussen came from a family of pastors and teachers in Schleswig-Holstein. He was a son of Rieseby pastor Hermann Julius Jungclaussen (1818-1896). The rector of the Schleswig Cathedral School Jacob Philipp Albrecht Jungclaussen (1788-1860) was his grandfather.
From 1883 he first worked as a pastor in Itzehoe , where he apparently first came into contact with the ideas of the seaman's mission from England . In July 1887 he went to Cardiff , Wales, and studied the work of the seafaring missions operating on the Bristol Channel in practice. He played a decisive role in transferring the experiences there to Germany. In 1891 he was appointed the first full-time seaman's pastor on German soil by the Association of the Inner Mission in Hamburg . Together with merchants and senators, he founded the “ Aid Committee for German Seamen's Mission” , today's German Seamen's Mission in Hamburg . During the Hamburg cholera epidemic of 1892 , he volunteered to take care of the sick. From 1892 he published the papers for Seemannsmission together with F. Harms . From July to December 1900 he also acted as Secretary General of the German Seamen's Mission. In 1901 he left Hamburg and became parish pastor , first in Zarpen near Lübeck , and finally in Holtenau . There he retired in the winter of 1920 and died the following year.
