The German Nature Conservation Prize is a competition that awards "particularly original, forward-looking and exemplary project ideas in the field of nature conservation" in Germany. The annual award was launched by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation in cooperation with the outdoor company Jack Wolfskin and was awarded for the first time in 2011.

Background and goal

The national nature conservation prize is aimed at individuals who are volunteers in nature conservation or nature education. It also supports non-governmental and non-profit organizations such as nature conservation associations, associations and foundations, citizens' initiatives, schools, kindergartens, other educational institutions and initiatives as well as youth organizations and associations, etc. a.

BfN President Beate Jessel said that the German Nature Conservation Prize aims to strengthen awareness of nature and civic engagement in nature conservation in Germany . It therefore particularly honors projects that are jointly supported by different interest groups and have an impact beyond the group of people directly involved in the project. This includes projects from the protection of species and biotopes , as well as projects to educate and promote nature. In this way, the award helps to raise people's awareness and motivate them to commit to nature conservation.

Motto and award

In 2011, the motto of the award was "The future of the forest - protect, experience, use". All projects that applied in 2011 had to have a clear reference to this topic.

Only newly created projects are honored. The application takes place as part of a two-stage ideas competition: First, an idea sketch is submitted. Selected contributions move to the second stage and are then asked to develop their sketch of ideas into a detailed concept.

A jury named by founder Jack Wolfskin and sponsor BfN, made up of experts and celebrities such as Arved Fuchs, will decide on the awarding of the sponsorship prizes after a preliminary assessment and a technical examination by the BfN.

Jack Wolfskin donated a total of 250,000 euros, which the award-winning projects will receive on a pro-rata basis. The maximum amount for a single project is 150,000 euros. In addition to the sponsorship prizes, a special prize worth up to 10,000 euros for outstanding personal commitment by individuals to nature conservation in Germany can be awarded at the suggestion of the jury. The special price also comes from the foundation sum.
