Call for elections by the German Association using the edelweiss party symbol for the Italian parliamentary elections in 1921

Deutscher Verband (DV) was the name of the amalgamation of the two bourgeois German parties in South Tyrol , which took place in October 1919 under the impression of the Italian annexation of South Tyrol : the Tyrolean People's Party , which in turn was formed in October 1918 from the merger of conservatives and Christian socialists and the German freedom party Party , while the South Tyrolean Social Democrats rejected the German Association and preferred to work with the Italian Socialists until they were dissolved by the Italian fascists in 1924.

In the Italian parliamentary elections in South Tyrol in 1921, the DV achieved more than 90% of the votes cast and thus all four parliamentary mandates that were awarded in this province (namely: Friedrich von Toggenburg , Wilhelm von Walther , Eduard Reut-Nicolussi and Karl Tinzl ) . The first chairman of the DV was Eduard Reut-Nicolussi; In 1923 he was replaced by the lawyer Karl Tinzl. Otto Vinatzer was the first secretary from 1919 to 1922. The most important press organ of the DV was the Christian-social “Tiroler” (from 1923 “Der compatriot”) until it was banned.

The German Association was dissolved by the fascist Mussolini government in 1926 as part of the Italy-wide party ban . In 1945 the South Tyrolean People's Party (SVP) continued the party-political tradition of the German Association. In addition to continuities of leaders, the party took over a. the edelweiss as a party symbol - the alpine flower that was used as a list symbol by the German Association as early as 1921.
