German Currywurst Museum in Berlin-Mitte

The German Currywurst Museum Berlin was in the Schützenstraße 70 in Berlin district of Mitte . It was the first museum in Germany to focus on currywurst .

history

The museum was opened on August 15, 2009 and showed the “unique history of the German currywurst cultural asset ”. The idea for the museum is said to have come from the initiator Martin Löwer during a visit to a yam museum in Jamaica . Three years later, with the help of 20 private donors, he was able to raise the necessary five million euros and open the museum. However, the museum had to be closed again on December 21, 2018. The museum had just under a million visitors before it closed.

Subject areas

The museum was divided into five subject areas:

  • Shop magic & snack culture: The visitors were able to enter a replica of a snack stand and look into the museum from the perspective of a seller. A map of Berlin showed the location of well-known currywurst stalls, such as " Curry 36 " or " Konnopke's Imbiß ". The global distribution of currywurst could be traced on a world map.
  • Ingredients & spices: The different ingredients of the curry powder were displayed in a spice chamber and their origin explained.
  • History & legend: A separate room was dedicated to Herta Heuwer , who is considered to be the inventor of the currywurst.
  • Ecology & fast food: In the back of the museum the manufacturing process of a cardboard box for currywurst was shown. A timeline provided an example of how eating habits have developed over the past 5000 years.
  • Cinema & TV: Scenes from well-known TV series were shown, such as three ladies from the grill or from the crime scene , in which the currywurst was featured. The American short film Best of the Wurst by Grace Lee was shown in a separate area .
