Generations of the Nivea jar and Persil packaging in the German Packaging Museum

A permanent exhibition shows over 1,000 packaging from well-known brands from different epochs and their historical development. In addition to generations of the Nivea can , the Coca-Cola bottle, the Persil can and much more. The museum also exhibits children's shops from the 19th and 20th centuries and earthenware jugs for mineral water from the 18th century. A much-noticed rarity is also the cigarette case, which was produced exclusively for the sale of the Titanic on board . Probably from a survivor, the can shows a drawing of the ship heading for an iceberg.

There are also temporary special exhibitions, which are often dedicated to the anniversary of a certain partner brand. For example, from April to August 2012 there was an exhibition on the 100th anniversary of the bear brand and from May to October 2015 250 years of Schwan-STABILO were honored.

history

In the 1990s, six companies came together under Dieter Berndt , with the common desire to show the beauty and indispensability of packaging and the idea for a museum. In 1993 the “Förderverein Deutsches Verpackungs-Museum e. V. ”, which was entered in the register of associations of the Leipzig district court. Two years later, the location was also fixed - it was to be the old Nothkirche in Heidelberg. At this time, the art historian and folklorist Hans-Georg Böcher wrote a book about the importance of packaging for art. His publisher Peter Jochen Schott brought the two parties together, and in 1996 Böcher became the association's first managing director. He changed the original concept - away from a mere information center towards a cultural institution. Since Dieter Berndt saw the museum on the right track, he withdrew from the board. The packaging museum opened the following year.

In 2009, Hans-Georg Böcher's house bank canceled the museum's overdraft - from now on the board members and Böcher himself were to be personally liable. He then looked for a new financial partner and found him in the Sparkasse Heidelberg, which granted him the desired overdraft facility.

In the meantime, the packaging museum no longer has any problems finding conveyors. More than 200 companies are members of the development association and pay the annual membership fee of 770 euros, including brand manufacturers such as Beiersdorf AG , Robert Bosch GmbH , Coca-Cola GmbH , Ferrero Deutschland GmbH , HiPP GmbH , Mars GmbH , Nestlé Deutschland AG and Tesa SE .

Events

The German Packaging Museum is the initiator of the German Packaging Dialogue, to which it invites every year. The event took place for the 21st time on October 18, 2018 and sees itself as an exclusive platform for top-class speakers from the brand and packaging industry and related industries. Probably the most prominent guest in 2018 was Philipp Lahm . As the majority owner of the Schneekoppe brand, he spoke about the role of packaging in the resurgence of his company. In the course of the history of this event, personalities such as Richard Oetker , Michael Bahlsen and Claus Hipp have also contributed to the design.

In addition, the “Packaging of the Year” award was presented as part of the German Packaging Dialogue , most recently to Chipsfrisch Hungarian.
