DeviantArt is a commercial online service with numerous elements of a community that offers registered users the opportunity to publish their own works in the fields of photography , graphics or illustration . Many of these works can be offered in the integrated shop and ordered by other users in printed form; no fee-based membership is required for this.

offer

The registration and use of DeviantArt is free of charge. Certain additional offers and services are associated with costs. This includes the purchase of users' works as posters, art prints, postcards, etc. as well as the purchase of units of a community currency. The community currently has almost 10 million registered users with a total of around 100 million publications (as of January 2010).

In principle, any form of art that can be digitized can be published, whereby the focus is on photography and digital photo manipulation . Other categories cover the areas of traditional painting and graphics , anime , flash animation , vector , 3D , film and pixel art, poetry , prose and stock photography .

A finished work is called a deviation in the terminology of the page , while drafts are called a scrap . The works are sorted according to categories, which in turn can be sorted according to new or popular entries.

DeviantArt also publishes works of art that deviate significantly from US mass tastes (such as manga, anime) and drawings of naked people, animals and beings as well as erotic photographs. The latter can only be seen by adult users, as there is a filter for “adult content”.

Functions

Beyond the mere dissemination of art addition, users of the website, as Deviant ( Engl. : Otherwise, of / Alternative), respectively, communicate in different ways, u. a. with a forum system , an internal e-mail system and via your own homepage.

Another forum deals with suggestions from users, which may be incorporated into the next version of the platform, so that users can influence the design of the page.

Paying subscribers receive additional convenience functions.

Versions

DeviantArt publishes "versions" of its website. Each version in turn includes the release of various new functions. The third, fourth and fifth versions of the website were all released on August 7th, "birthday".

7th May 18, 2010 With version 7 a new and smaller header has been introduced and the search has been removed from all pages except the homepage. Version 7 was later adapted so that every page received a search.
8th October 15, 2014
(Revised December 4, 2014)
There was a new style for the header, the large footer was removed, the browsing functions were revised, users could set a "watch" on pages to be informed about new works, status reports etc.

Copyright and licensing issues

There is no automatic check for potential copyright infringement and creative commons license terms when an artwork is uploaded to DeviantArt. Such problems can go unnoticed until someone reports them. There is a report function for this, in order to report potential copyright and license violations to the administrators. Some members have been victims of copyright infringement by sellers illegally using artwork on products and prints.
