Dewey Martin (born December 8, 1923 in Katemcy , Texas - † April 9, 2018 in San Pedro , California ) was an American actor .

life and career

Born in a small Texas village, Dewey Martin turned to acting after World War II. He first worked for a few years in the theater before making his film debut in 1949 with a small role as a criminal in Nicholas Ray's film Before Closed Doors . More important supporting roles for Martin quickly followed, including in the science fiction classic Das Ding aus Another World , produced by star director Howard Hawks . He entrusted the handsome, muscular Martin with second leading roles in the western The Big Sky (1952) alongside Kirk Douglas and in the lavish monumental film Land of the Pharaohs (1955). He played the little brother of Humphrey Bogart in the crime film On a Day Like Any Other , directed by William Wyler , which was also released in 1955. Somewhat surprisingly, its success noticeably decreased a little later. From the late 1950s onwards, he usually only received offers for second-rate movies or guest roles in television series. One of the few exceptions was a minor role as a soldier in the war epic The Longest Day of 1962.

One of his cousins was the politician Ross Bass . From 1956 to 1959 Dewey Martin was married to the famous singer Peggy Lee . In the 1970s, Dewey Martin retired from the acting business. He lived in California and got married a second time. Dewey Martin died in April 2018 at the age of 94, but this only became known four months later.
