Dexamenos (King of Olenos)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dexamenos ( Greek  Δεξαμενός , the hospitable ) is a figure in Greek mythology .

Most of the narratives agree that there were problems with a Centaur when his daughter married , which Heracles resolved effectively.

The Arcadian prince Azan is said to have been married to Dexamenus' daughter Hippolyte . At the wedding the jealous Centaur Eurytion was intrusive, but killed by Heracles in time. In another variant, the daughter is called Mnesimache . Eurytion wants to force Dexamenus to give him the girl to wife. Heracles, just coming from the cleaning of the Augean stables , intervenes sustainably. According to a third version, Deianeira is the daughter: Heracles had promised her marriage, in his absence the Centaur harasses the king, but the hero returns in time.

Deianeira, however, is mostly mentioned as the daughter of the Calydonian king Oineus . The reason for all the variations is, as is so often the case, a shift and amalgamation of local myths. There was a city called Olenos in both Aitonia (where Kalydon was) and Achaia (in the Peloponnese ) . As a result, the genealogies of the kings Dexamenos and Oineus were partially mixed up.

Last but not least, it is reported that Dexamenus had two daughters, Theronike and Theraiphone , who were married to the Aktorions Kteatos and Eurytos. His son Eurypylos is said to have gone with Heracles against Troy .
