Dezső Keresztury (born September 6, 1904 in Zalaegerszeg , Austria-Hungary ; died April 30, 1996 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian writer and librarian.

Life

Dezső Keresztury attended the József Eötvös Collegium and studied philology in Budapest, Berlin and Vienna. From 1929 he worked as a lecturer and librarian at the Hungarian Institute in Berlin . In 1936 he received a teaching position at the József Eötvös Collegium. After the war ended in 1945 he became director of the college and participated in the founding of the Hungarian Writers' Association (Magyar Írószövetség). Keresztury became a member of the Nemzeti Parasztpárt (Peasant Party) and was Minister of Religion and Education from November 15, 1945 to March 14, 1947.

Keresztury was general librarian of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences from 1948 to 1950 and then head of the scientific department of the Széchényi National Library until his retirement in 1971 . In 1982 he was accepted as a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences . In 1994 he became honorary chairman of the Hungarian PEN club.

Keresztury was awarded the Grillparzer Ring in Austria in 1973 and the Herder Prize in Germany in 1976. In Hungary he received the Attila József Prize in 1968 and the Széchenyi Prize in 1996 .
