Dharavi, Slum for Sale is a Swiss-German documentary by Lutz Konermann from 2010 .

action

The film is about the plans of the architect Mukesh Mehta to renovate the Dharavi slum in Mumbai , of which he is firmly convinced that they will be successful by 2020 at the latest. To this end, he plans to tear down the entire slum and then to build social housing on around 20% of the area for the previous residents of Dharavi and sell the rest. These measures are also intended to generate profit in this way. To do this, however, the residents of the slum would have to be expropriated because they are partly the owners of land on Dharavi's land. Therefore, Cyrus Guzder, a competitor of Mukesh Mehta, is very critical of the plans. He even goes so far as to call Mehta technically incompetent. An even more harsh critic of the architect is the potter Rajo Tank, who owns 20 square meters of floor space in Dharavi, on which he has been running a family-owned pottery for five generations. He dries his clay pieces in self-built walls, with which he ensures a modest livelihood for his family. This would no longer be possible after Mehta's plans were implemented. Therefore, Rajo Tank even announces that if the plans are implemented, he will react aggressively and with violence. Because of this attitude, which Tank shares with numerous residents, the 70-year-old peace activist Bhau Korde, who has achieved a certain prominence, fears riots and unrest in Dharavi. He therefore rejects Mukesh Mehta's plans.

Reviews

"The impressive documentary first presents the redevelopment project and then focuses on the resistance, being on a par with the slum dwellers."
