Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani (born December 28, 1932 in Chorwad , Gujarat ; † July 6, 2002 in Mumbai , Maharashtra ) was the founder of the Indian petrochemical company and India's richest billionaire . He is also known under the name Dhirubhai Ambani ( bhai is a respectful suffix in Gujarat and means "older brother" in many Indian languages).

He was born the son of a teacher and married Kokilaben, with whom he had two sons and two daughters. After his death, his sons Mukesh Ambani and Anil Ambani took over as CEO of Reliance Industries . Due to numerous differences between the two brothers, they split up the company and Anil Ambani founded the Reliance - Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group . With a fortune of more than 55 billion US dollars , his eldest son Mukesh Ambani is Asia's richest man , ahead of Lakshmi Mittal and Azim Premji , the chairman of the board of the software company Wipro Technologies .
