The White Daffodil ( Narcissus poeticus ), also a poet Narcissus , Montreux Narcissus or True daffodil called, is a plant of the genus of daffodils in the family of Amaryllis (Amaryllidaceae).
features
The poet's daffodils grow as perennial herbaceous plants that develop bulbs as survival organs and reach heights of 40 to 50 cm. Their leaves are only 5 to 8 mm wide.
The hermaphrodite flowers stand individually on an inflorescence stem, are creamy white and have a yellow-red corolla in their center, colored by carotene crystals. This secondary crown serves as a colored stain sap and has a different and more intense fragrance than the rest of the perigon. The base of the perigone is only slightly narrowed. Three stamens are inserted lower and three higher. This is a differentiator to the star daffodil ( Narcissus radiiflorus ), in which all six stamens are at the same height. The flowering period extends from April to May.
The plant is highly toxic and contains the toxic alkaloids narcissin and narcipoietin , especially in the onion .
distribution
White daffodils were originally only native to the Mediterranean region . They can now be found worldwide through cultivation. They prefer low-lime and moist locations such as wet meadows and flat moors.
As a wild plant at home, the white daffodil is severely threatened in its populations and accordingly strictly protected.
Multiplication
The white narcissus reproduces vegetatively by brooding onions . The perigone tube is up to 3 centimeters long and therefore mainly pollinated by butterflies.
use
After the yellow daffodil, the white daffodil is the economically most important of the daffodils. It is sold in large quantities every year as a cut flower as well as a bedding and border plant. For use in medicine, see daffodils .
