Dick's Picks Volume 2 is a live album by the band Grateful Dead .

history

The album was recorded during a Halloween performance on October 31, 1971 at the Ohio Theater in Columbus , Ohio , and released in March 1995. The Ohio Theater had recently been restored and reopened before being officially registered as a National Historic Monument in 1977 under the official name of the Official Theater of the State of Ohio .

Dick's Picks Volume 2 is the only album in the Dick's Picks series that consists of a single CD. The other albums are double , triple or quadruple albums .

The gig on October 31st was one of the few in which the band appeared as a quintet . Mickey Hart had left the band shortly before because his father embezzled money from the band, and Ron McKernan was already replaced by Keith Godchaux at the concert because he had health problems. Keith's wife Donna Godchaux was only later to join the band, so that the band consisted of seven members until McKernan's death in 1973.

The name Dick's Pick comes from the official recording archivist of the band Dick Latvala , who started the series and selected the songs for it.

Like volume 1, volume 2 has a caveat emptor warning:

" This compact disc has been digitally remastered directly from the original quarter track 7.5 ips analog tape. It is a snapshot of history, not a modern professional recording, and may therefore exhibit some technical anomalies and the unavoidable effects of the ravages of time. "

In addition, like his previous album, Rolling Stone gave it 2 out of 5 stars, which is the worst rating among the albums in the Dick's Picks series. The best ratings have Vol. 4 and 8 with 5 out of 5 stars each.

Dick's Picks Volume 2 was the last album released before the death of band leader Jerry Garcia .
