The thick-billed leaf bird ( Chloropsis sonnerati ) is a species of bird from the family of leaf birds (Chloropseidae).

The Latin additional species refers to Pierre Sonnerat .

The bird is found in Southeast Asia in Indonesia , Malaysia , the Malay Peninsula and Thailand .

The distribution area includes tropical or subtropical moist deep forest and their margins.

features

The bird is 18–21 cm tall, the male weighs 42–48 g, the female 38–41 g. The species is the largest and heaviest of the leaf birds. The main distinguishing feature of the bluebeard leaf bird ( Chloropsis cyanopogon ) is the strong, long, blackish bill, slightly curved at the tip, the yellow throat and the yellow eye ring in the female and the lack of yellow delimitation of the black throat spot in the male. The iris is brown. Apart from the black face with a cobalt blue beard stripe, the male has green plumage throughout , and a bluish-green sheen can be seen on the wings of the hand . The female has a green face with a clear yellow demarcation from the throat. Young birds have a yellowish streak of beard.

Geographic variation

The following subspecies are recognized:

  • Chloropsis s. sonnerati Jardine & Selby , 1827, nominated form - Java and Bali
  • Chloropsis s. zosterops Vigors , 1830 - South of Myanmar and Southwest Thailand, south to Sumatra, east to the Natuna Islands and Borneo

The male's singing is described as a varied sequence of powerful, flowing trills such as “wit-chew”.

Way of life

The food is varied, it consists of arthropods , fruits , and nectar . Prey animals are sought between the leaves.

The breeding season is between January and July.

Hazardous situation

The stock is considered to be at risk ( Vulnerable ) due to habitat loss.
