The Conquest of Inner Freedom is a German documentary film by Aleksandra Kumorek and Silvia Kaiser from 2010.

action

The Berlin prison JVA Tegel , Europe's largest men's prison, embarked on a worldwide unique experiment in 2000: prisoners practice philosophy. Together with the philosopher Horst Gronke and Peter Brune, the prisoners reflect on themselves in Socratic conversations and question their own value system.

What changes is a person capable of? Can prisoners leave the old system of values behind and can philosophy help to fathom the foundation of one's own personality? Without relativising the crimes of the prisoners, the film questions the motivations of criminals, makes them think critically about themselves and their actions - and about how to maintain a piece of inner freedom in the extreme atmosphere of the prison.

Reviews

  • "A big, small, wonderful film." (Dirk Pilz, Berliner Zeitung)
  • “Serious criminal offenders have never been seen that way. After the film it is easier to believe in the good in people. "(Martin Schwarzbeck, Zitty)
