The Five from Barska Street is a Polish film from 1954 .

action

The film is set in Warsaw, which was destroyed by the war in 1947. The main characters are five young people from Barska Street. The youngsters grew up with the war and the German occupation. Her life was determined by a will to survive in an inhuman time. After the war they have a hard time adapting to the new times. They continue to live as they learned during the war. They don't earn their income through work, but through theft and rip-offs. Life continues to take place underground. Ultimately, the young people end up in court for their actions. The verdict is lenient as the prosecution witness does not appear in court. You are given two years probation. The mason Wojciechowski is named as probation officer, who is supposed to educate the youngsters to become full members of the new communist society. However, the youth have support from the reactionary anti-communist underground, which is also responsible for preventing the prosecution witness from appearing in court.

The young people are free again and continue to pursue their usual lifestyle. Wojciechowski is overwhelmed with the young people and is locked up by them so that they can continue to pursue their robbery. When Wojciechowski tries to free himself, he has a fatal accident. The young people feel guilty for the death of the actually likeable man. Thanks to his help, two of them had already found work building roads. Kazek meets the girl Hanka at work and falls in love with her. The anti-communist underground is planning a bomb attack on the construction site and the young people from Barskastrasse are supposed to help. However, they are no longer willing to participate in this assassination attempt. The attack takes place without them, but the police can stop it. However, Kazek is seriously injured and the young people are suspected of being involved.

The film was the first Polish film to take part in the Cannes Film Festival . At the 1954 Cannes International Film Festival he was awarded the Prix International.
